Ikea Hack: Farmhouse Style Step Stool

As I finished up my kitchen mat project the other day and started thinking about how I wanted to shoot the photos, I realized how badly my Ikea stool needed to be painted.  We've had this stool for years and it gets used for everything from changing light bulbs to little boy cooking help. Not to mention all of the things it's been used for that it's not supposed to be used for like little boys sneaking into cupboards looking for treats. Needless to say, it was a mess of stains and nicks.

A few coats of spray paint would have been quick and easy, but I love the look of a farmhouse style kitchen so with that in mind, I set about to transform my Bekvam stool.

After scrubbing down the stool with soapy water and letting it dry, I used a damp sponge to apply a coat of white acrylic paint.

Once the white paint was dry, I used FolkArt Antiquing Medium in Apple Butter Brown and lightly coated the top and bottom step surfaces as well as the edges of each of the legs.  After applying, I wiped each area down with a paper towel.

I created a freezer paper stencil by hand drawing a French style numbers.  Once taped on the stencil, I painted using black chalkboard paint.  There is no tricky reasoning behind that, it was just the only black paint I had on hand.

Once the numbers dried I realized there were some paint leakage spots where the stencil was a bit loose, I used a razor blade to scrape around the edges of each painted number and symbol.  It gives it much more of a weathered look around the numbers which fits right into my plan (mwahahaha).

Two more coats of antiquing medium on the steps and a coat of Mod Podge Acrylic Sealer in Matte and I was thrilled with the outcome.  I should have done this a long time ago.  I think the photo bombing teddy approves as well. Oh, the adventures this guy has!

  2. Oh, I was just thinking about painting my BEKVÄM!
I already thought about painting the legs white and staining the top, but these numbers are such a lovely addition! Great inspiration, thanks!

  4. It looks great that way! Such a nice facelift for a step ladder. I may consider doing my non-Ikea step ladder like this. It's just boring unfinished wood.
